2018-2023 CBA Young Lawyers International Program (YLIP)

Under YLIP, the CBA places young lawyers and law graduates as volunteers with partner organizations working in legal reform, access to justice and human rights. The YLIP is funded by Global Affairs Canada (GAC).

In March 2018, YLIP was reinstated with four-year funding from GAC to create 32 internships each year.  Due to the impact of COVID -19 on YLIP intern deployment, the CBA and GAC have extended the program through to March 2023, and piloted 15 paid, virtual internships in 2021.

In 2022, the CBA will be offering paid, virtual internships of 6-months duration. Placements involve pre-internship preparations, ongoing complementary training, and post-placement public engagement activities.

Placement areas at one of YLIP’s *23 host partner organizations include:

  • Southern Africa (South Africa, Namibia, Madagascar)
  • East Africa (Kenya)
  • The Caribbean (Guyana)
  • Central Asia (Kyrgyzstan)
  • Southeast Asia (Vietnam, Myanmar)
  • Eastern Europe and the Balkans (Ukraine, Serbia).

*Each year internship placements may vary in accordance with host organization capacity, past-intern experience, and the exploration of new partnerships.

Please see here for information on how to apply.  YLIP looks forward to the resumption of overseas placements in future iterations of the program.
