We are excited to host a moderated panel featuring members of our Executive working on various facets of charity law. CBA CHARITY LAW ONLINE SYMPOSIUM – MAY 9, 2024

Our upcoming symposium will take place online on May 9, 2024. The symposium will feature leading experts and practitioners from across Canada. The symposium will include three webinars and more!

The first webinar will feature a discussion of the sources of charity law, the institutions that regulate charities, and how these sources of law and institutions interact within our Canadian legal and policy framework. The second webinar will feature an update from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) Charities Directorate, a discussion of the new qualifying disbursement rules, and a presentation from the Department of Finance on the legislative drafting process. The final webinar will feature updates on case law, Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) rules and CRA audits.

CHARITIES AND NOT-FOR-PROFIT LAW STUDENT ESSAY CONTEST

The submission deadline for this year’s law student essay contest is May 2, 2024. Details on the contest criteria and eligibility are available. If you know a law student who is interested in charity and not-for-profit law, encourage them to submit an essay!

IMPORTANT PRACTICE UPDATES

  • New CRA Guidance: CRA published its official guidance on “Registered charities making grants to non-qualified donees” (CG-032) on December 19, 2023
  • New Version of T3010: CRA released version 24 of the Form T3010 to be used by charities for fiscal periods ending on or after December 31, 2023
