CBA Charities and Not-for-Profit Law Student Essay Contest

The CBA Charites and Not-for-Profit Law Section has established a law student essay contest related to general topics in charities and not-for-profit law. The objectives of the contest are to promote and reward interest in charity and not-for-profit law topics in Canadian law schools and to promote participation by law students in the Section.

CRITERIA & ELIGIBILITY

The award is presented annually for the best English or French scholarly paper received by the submission date on a subject relating to Canadian charity and not-for-profit law, by an individual who is a full-time student currently enrolled in a JD or LLB program at a Canadian law school. This includes National Committee on Accreditation candidates enrolled at a Canadian law school. Current articling students in Canada and candidates in the Law Practice Program are also eligible as long as they are not called to the Bar in Canada.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

  • Papers must be at least 12 pages and no more than 30 pages in length, including references.
  • Paper must be double spaced using Times New Roman, font size 12, double-spaced, excluding the title page and bibliography.
  • Papers must address a theme of significance in the field of Canadian charity and not-for-profit law. The paper must focus on Canadian charity and not-for-profit law rather than be tangential to the area of law.
  • Papers must be appropriately referenced; all commonly used referencing methods in the legal field will be accepted.
  • Papers may be written in English or in French and must be original.
  • Papers must be researched and written by one author. Papers must be the author’s own original, unpublished work.
  • The author’s name and identifying information must not appear on the paper itself.

Entries received after the deadline will not be considered.

PLAGIARISM POLICY

Submissions must not infringe the intellectual property rights of others, and must not plagiarize another’s work. Plagiarism is deliberately presenting the ideas, expression of ideas, or work of others as one’s own. Plagiarism includes reproducing or paraphrasing portions of someone else’s published or unpublished material, regardless of the source, and presenting these as one’s own without proper citation or reference to the original source. The CBA reserves the right to assess all submissions for content that potentially infringes on or plagiarizes the work of another, and will disqualify any candidate that submits such content.

SELECTION PROCESS

  • Individuals must submit their own papers for consideration, together with their full name, address, telephone/fax numbers and email address.      
  • Papers will be evaluated by a jury of 3-5 members of the Executive Committee of the CBA Charites and Not-for-Profit Law Section and may include one additional person (such as a practitioner or professor) specialized in the particular topic dealt with in the paper.
  • The Section reserves the right to not give out the award in any one year.

AWARD & PRESENTATION

The award consists of:

  • A monetary prize of $500.
  • In years offered, complimentary registration to the Charity Law Symposium (limited funding may be available to assist with travel and accommodation if needed).
  • The presentation of a certificate at the Symposium (in years offered).
  • The winner will be announced on the Section’s webpage and through Section and CBA communications as appropriate. The winning article will be published on the Charities and Not-for-Profit Law Section webpage.
