With the winter season upon us, I extend my warmest holiday wishes to you and your loved ones. In alignment with our Section’s commitment to continued learning and professional development, I wish to announce a series of Brown Bag presentations planned in 2024.

To start the new year, I invite you to our first presentation “International Career Options: Insights for Public Sector Lawyers” scheduled for January 24, 2024 from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm (ET). This session will feature accomplished legal professionals sharing their experiences and offering their valuable perspectives working with international non-governmental organizations (NGOs), including the International Criminal Court, the United Nations and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. Whether you are a seasoned lawyer contemplating a career shift, a new graduate or simply curious about international career possibilities, this session promises to equip you with valuable insights and inspiration. Bring your questions and engage with our esteemed panelists.

Following this, we will explore the intersection of emerging technology and the law with “The Hidden Side of AI: What Public Sector Lawyers Need to Know”. This timely presentation will address the legal and ethical implications artificial intelligence presents in the public sector. The details for this engaging panel discussion along with other upcoming Brown Bag events will be announced in the new year.

Governments at all levels are increasingly using or regulating artificial intelligence (AI) systems which impact and affect the rights and interests of citizens, particularly with the rise of generative AI.

This panel discussion will explore key legal and ethical issues of AI for public sector lawyers, including privacy, intellectual property, bias, accountability, transparency, and public interest. It will also highlight recent developments and challenges in the Canadian and global AI lawmaking landscape, and their implications for public sector entities. The panel will draw on the expertise and insights of lawyers who have experience advising on AI matters in the public sector, as well as the perspectives of AI researchers and practitioners who can explain how AI works and what it can and cannot do.
