Welcome all Section members to the 2023/24 year! I am honoured to serve as your Chair.

I look forward to a great term where we will build upon our past achievements to accomplish new goals.

One of my main goals for the Section this year is to continue building a strong forum that connects and provides value to our Section members practicing in all international fields (ranging from international trade law to international human rights law) in the private, in-house, and public sectors throughout Canada.

Our current Section initiatives include, but are not limited to:

  • Mentoring New Lawyers interested in International Law through the Law Students and New Lawyers Committee
  • Actively communicating with section members through the Communications Committee
  • Publishing high quality International Law Articles through the Canadian International Lawyer Journal
  • Evaluating submissions for the CBA International Law Section Essay Contest

I invite you to join the international law listservs and to follow us on LinkedIn to stay up to date on our activities.

Brown Bag Kickoff: Airline Industry & International Law – October 27, 2023

Join us for our inaugural “brown bag” virtual lunch CPD, where we’ll delve into the dynamic intersection of the airline industry and international law. During this event, participants will acquire invaluable insights into the current international legal landscape affecting the aviation sector, while also uncovering pathways for enhancement.

This unique program goes beyond legal aspects, delving into the business dimension of aviation as well as the ethical and international standards that shape the industry and broaden our knowledge of their impact.

This event also offers a unique opportunity to engage with legal professionals, industry experts, and stakeholders during a live Q&A session with our distinguished speakers. Don't miss this chance to connect, learn, and contribute to the discourse shaping the future of aviation and international law.

Meeting with the Sanctions Policy and Operations Coordination Division of Global Affairs Canada (GAC)

The Sanctions Working Group coordinated meetings with GAC in Toronto and Ottawa this summer to follow up on the bar’s requests for guidance, further to meetings earlier in the year and in 2022. We are looking to set further meetings with GAC to continue to press for guidance on these key matters. The details of each meeting will be announced on our Section listserv (enrol in our listservs) when confirmed.
