Action Plan on Legal Aid

CARRIED

WHEREAS the availability of competent legal advice from counsel of choice is a fundamental principle of the Canadian justice system;

WHEREAS the legal profession has a duty to ensure that such legal services are available to all Canadians and The Canadian Bar Association has a leadership role on this issue;

WHEREAS the legal aid system is currently in a crisis situation due to cut backs in funding from both the federal and provincial governments;

BE IT RESOLVED THAT The Canadian Bar Association direct its Legal Aid Liaison Committee to liaise with the Federation of Law Societies Legal Aid Committee in order to develop a national response to the crisis in government funding of legal aid programs across the country.
