PARALEGAL, LEGAL AND COMMERCIAL SERVICES TEAM

Terms:  Full-time permanent

Salary: Commensurate with experience

Location: Ottawa (Hybrid Work Model) | Montreal (Hybrid Work Model) | Toronto (Hybrid Work Model) | Possibility of Remote

ABOUT THE ROLE:

The Paralegal is a member of HSO’s Legal and Commercial Services team (the Team). The Team is responsible for legal direction and advice, governance, privacy, contract and proposal support, and applying enterprise risk management. The Team works across HSO to assist all the business and support units who deliver HSO products and services to internal and external parties in Canada and globally. The Paralegal plays a key role in the Legal and Commercial Services team meeting its responsibilities in a timely manner.

Main Responsibilities:

The Paralegal assists the Team to plan, research, develop, and manage information related legal and commercial responsibilities. The Paralegal gathers facts and retrieves data, collects information, and analyzes legal and other documents (e.g., briefing notes, etc.), and drafts reports to make recommendations. The Paralegal also manages information for the Team including hard copy and digital files that may be sensitive and require discretion. Additionally, the Paralegal will function as a vital part of the corporate governance team that manages matters related to the Board of Directors of HSO and its affiliates. The Paralegal also participates in corporate functions in accordance with policies and procedures, e.g., maintaining records, preparing and reviewing filings, and other transactions as needed.

Reporting to the Director of Legal and Commercial Services, and working closely with the Risk Manager, the successful candidate will:

  • Have excellent organizational and priority management skills.
  • Work collaboratively and co-operatively in a team in addition to focused individual work, as needed.
  • Communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally.
  • Use advanced research skills, with attention to detail.
  • Have a flexible, positive attitude, while being proactive and demonstrating a good work ethic.
  • Be adaptive to change and willing to problem solve when unexpected events arise.
  • Use administrative skills to track information into organized structures/databases per policies and procedures, and to develop and document new workflows as appropriate.
  • Have appropriate discretion, judgment, and awareness in sensitive situations.
  • Be interested in professional and ongoing development, including learning from events and collaborating to make improvements as needed.
  • Support the Legal and Commercial Services team with internal and external sessions by preparing briefing materials, meeting agendas, meeting minutes, and following up on meeting action items.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • University degree or college diploma. An equivalent combination of work experience and education will be considered.
  • Commissioner of Oaths or Notary Public or equivalent.
  • Certified licensed with the Law Society of Ontario or such similar governing body
  • Minimum three to four years of progressive and relevant experience.
  • Skilled using Microsoft Office digital tools, e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint.
  • Must be proficient in English, and speaking French is an asset.
