Our team is in search of an Associate (3-5 year call) to join our Business and Economic Development practice group.

We are seeking a lawyer with a Corporate, Commercial, Securities and/or Financing Law background, preferably with a knowledge of law impacting Indigenous groups in Canada. The ideal candidate is a solicitor with experience with corporate and commercial transactions, trusts and taxation, and impact benefit agreements.

Role Overview

The position is full-time and based in Victoria, BC. Our lawyers are sometimes required to travel to Indigenous communities throughout Canada.

Qualifications

This ideal candidate for this position meets the following requirements:

  1. A lawyer of a 3–5-year call.
  2. The candidate must be a member in good standing with one or more Canadian Law Societies – and willing to be called to the bar in BC, ON, and the territories
  3. Experience with Indigenous communities will be an asset. 
  4. Strong research, legal drafting, and analytical skills are a must.
  5. Experience communicating complex legal concepts and demonstrated experience in Aboriginal, Constitutional and Corporate/Commercial, including familiarity with impact benefit agreements.
  6. Flexibility to travel and work in Indigenous communities is a necessary condition of employment with a valid driver’s license required as some of the work will be in remote areas that are not otherwise accessible.
  7. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  8. Self-motivated interest to contribute and expand in our areas of practice which include Lands and Governance, Section 35, Business and Economic Development, and Northern practice groups.

We offer a generous range of benefits, including health, dental, 4.5% RSP contributions, and professional development allowances.

This position is intended to support ongoing files within multiple jurisdictions and/or locations. Woodward offers flexibility with a hybrid work model.
