Real Property Law School Essay Contest

The Real Property Section has established a Law School Essay Competition related to general topics in Canadian real property law. The objectives of the competition are to promote and reward interest in real property law topics in Canadian law schools and to promote participation of law students in Real Property Section.

Criteria & Eligibility

The award is presented annually for the best scholarly paper or article received by the submission date on a subject relating to Canadian real property law. All Full-time university students currently enrolled at a Canadian law school at either an undergraduate or graduate level are eligible to enter.

Submission & Selection Process

Papers must adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Papers must be no less than 12 pages and no more than 40 pages in length, including references
  • Papers must address a theme of significance in the field of Canadian real property law, public policy or public affairs related to Canadian real property law.
  • Papers must be appropriately referenced; all referencing methods in the legal field will be accepted.
  • Papers may be written in English or in French and must be original.
  • The author's name must not appear on the paper itself, but must be sent under separate cover.
  • A short abstract (max. 150 words) and author biography (max. 150 words) must also be submitted
  • The recipient of the award will be selected by a jury.

Deadline for submissions: February 28, 2018

Any entries received after the deadline will not be considered.

The award consists of a monetary prize in the amount of $500 prize. There will be no formal award presentation. As required, the National Section executive will work with the award recipients corresponding CBA branch to organize the presentation of a certificate. The winning paper will also be published on the National Real Property Section webpage.
