POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the COO, the Bilingual Director, National Sections & Professional Development (DSPD) is responsible for the overall day to day operations of the National Sections department and supports the strategic engagement, orientation, and onboarding of executive committee members. In addition, responsible for the overall development, delivery and effective operation of the National PD curriculum covering both substantive legal programs and law practice matters in accordance with CBA policy, objectives, and guidelines.  In the performance of his/her duties, the DSPD will interact, at all levels and to varying degrees, with a broad range of actual and potential stakeholders including CBA Executive and staff, Branches, CBA members, National Sections, the general public, all levels of government, sponsors and outside suppliers.  This is a critical senior level role requiring leadership, communication and business skills, the ability to manage a team and the ability to work effectively at both a strategic and operational level.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Working with a team of seventeen, the DSPD is responsible for:

Departmental oversight and Governance

  • Play a critical role in supporting the organization’s strategic plan specifically related to member engagement;
  • Support the governance related work of National Sections and facilitate collaboration with the Board;
  • Oversee and support the Sections Subcommittee as a Board Committee;
  • Assist with National Section elections and provide analysis and recommendations as needed;
  • Works with governance leads across the organization to ensure corporate alignment and cross departmental collaboration;
  • Contributes to the Executive Office’s departmental and corporate planning processes, lead and implement other special projects, research and analysis assigned by the CEO, as required.

Program Management

  • Develop and implement the CBA National PD program (conferences and webinars) and strategic plan;
  • Ongoing review, analysis and assessment of services and programs;
  • Develop and implement financial projections; budgets, and achieve financial targets;
  • Develop and implement PD related policies and procedures.

Conference Development

  • Develop and implement program ideas through liaising with CBA stakeholders;
  • Ongoing awareness, review and analysis of competitive offerings in the PD area;
  • Review program proposals to assess the probability of financial success and pedagogic structure of the program;
  • Oversee procurement process for all external suppliers.

Program Implementation and Review

  • Develop procedures and policies and supervise staff in the implementation of the administration and logistics of the delivery of programs;
  • Provide reviews, analyses and reports on all PD activities, developments, programs and conferences as required.

Promotion and Marketing

  • In collaboration with the PD and Sections Managers, develop and implement a cohesive and effective promotion and marketing strategy;
  • Work with the CBA Communications and Marketing Department to design, develop and implement the PD promotion strategy and promotional materials;
  • Identify target markets and ensure effective delivery of promotional and marketing material.

Staff Management

  • Lead and manage a team of varying levels and implement the National Sections and PD strategy, policies, programs, and day to day operations.

General Responsibilities and Duties

  • Oversee the conduct of research and development with regard to new technology and its potential application and integration in the design and delivery of PD and member engagement;
  • Building partnerships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders to increase revenue;
  • Liaise with CBA Branches to ensure minimum of overlap and duplication in programming;
  • Develop effective relations with other PD providers and law firm PD directors.

Qualifications, Skills and Professional Requirements

Educational and Professional Requirements

  • Law Degree from a Canadian University and/or Masters degree;
  • Member in good standing of a Law Society of a Province of Canada, if eligible;
  • Five or more years of experience in the practice of law in a legal environment and/or five or more years of experience in a similar role in a related Association or business;
  • Solid understanding of legal education requirements and accreditation process;
  • Experience in PD development and delivery would be an asset.

Leadership and Teamwork Skills

  • Ideally, the candidate will have strong leadership skills and experience and track record in leading a team in the successful achievement of multiple professional goals;
  • The ability to develop, articulate, and implement a cohesive vision and strategy with the team and within the context of a larger organization.

Management Skills

  • The ability to effectively manage a team of professionals with varying degrees of skills, experience and qualifications;
  • The ability to make effective judgments as appropriate and in accordance with CBA practice or to seek guidance and advice from more senior or specialized resources;
  • The ability to carry out any other management related tasks in an effective manner.

Financial Skills

  • Strong financial planning and budgeting skills with experience in the design and implementation of budgets and financial plans;
  • Experience monitoring financial performance and targets on an ongoing basis and making adjustments where required;
  • Collecting and reviewing financial data related to PD and provide reports and information as appropriate.

Personal Skills and Abilities

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in both official languages;
  • Excellent research, writing and editing skills;
  • Effective interpersonal skills, including tact and diplomacy;
  • Effective ability to make sound decisions;
  • Ability to work with all professional levels;
  • Ability to plan, organize and prioritize assignments and to work independently;
  • Ability to carry out project management from start to finish;
  • Ability to work as a team member with both professional staff and volunteers;
  • Ability to multi-task and work under pressure;
  • Ability to understand and respond to developing and current technologies and their potential use in PD and Sections;
  • Ability to work overtime and travel as circumstances warrant.
