Roles and Expectations: CBA National Immigration Law Section

Any member of the Executive Committee shall cease to hold office upon ceasing to be a member of the CBA or the Section.

All members of the Executive Committee must familiarize themselves with resources provided to Section leaders and operate collaboratively in accordance with CBA policies and procedures.

CHAIR

  • Oversee activities and preside at meetings and conference calls
  • Report to the Board of Directors as required
  • Cast the tie-breaking vote (if needed) in a Section election

VICE-CHAIR

  • Act for the Chair in the absence or inability of the Chair to act
  • Attend meetings and conference calls and assist the Chair and Executive Committee as needed, which may include taking the lead on one or more initiatives
  • Oversees Section Coordinators

SECRETARY/COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER*

  • Prepare minutes of meetings and conference calls in a timely manner
  • Ensure that Section members are informed of key Section activities, upcoming events, and opportunities to get involved in the work of the Section
  • Act as listserv moderator
  • Supervise the work of the social media coordinators.
  • Attend meetings and conference calls and assist the Executive Committee as needed

PAST CHAIR

  • Attend meetings and conference calls and assist the Executive Committee as needed

MEMBER-AT-LARGE

  • Attend conference calls and assist the Executive Committee as needed, which may include taking the lead on one or more initiatives; in-person meetings are not funded
  • Members-at-Large are expected to chair or draft at least one working group/submission

*The Secretary/Communications Officer sequentially occupies each office through to Past Chair, which involves a four-year commitment.
