The Honourable Palbinder Kaur Shergill

Justice ShergillWhat was your path into law and on to the bench?

The words impossible and natural both come to mind. Though this may seem a contradiction, I think this describes the journey of many. From an economic, societal, and cultural perspective, an immigrant child of humble financial means, growing up in a small town in Canada in the 1970’s, should not have aspired to more than a high school diploma and a job above minimum wage. If that child was female, the job would likely be replaced with a husband to provide for her and a house full of kids. But with parents who valued education, gender equality, and community service, my path was a natural extension of the Canadian dream. I was drawn to the law because I believed it was the most effective tool for change. After 26 years of a highly rewarding career as a litigator, I felt that it was time for a new challenge. I was drawn to the bench because I believed it would afford me an opportunity to grow and allow me to contribute to the law in a different manner.
