CBA Law Students – check us out!

  • November 14, 2019

Law school is full of information. Who to talk to, what to get involved with and how to set yourself apart…which can feel overwhelming at times.

The Law Students Section is your national connection to the CBA while you’re in law school and during your articling year. We are composed of current law students and articling students and work year-round to be your voice from coast to coast. We strive to advocate on issues unique to law students and articling students inside and outside the CBA.

Free Stuff!

We know what it’s like to be law students, and we know how great free stuff can be. The CBA is committed to making membership as affordable as possible while ensuring that membership is valuable. Check out these links:

We Want You!

Our Section exists to help you! Here are some ways to engage with our Section and the CBA.

The Every Lawyer

Like podcasts? The CBA has its own podcast: The Every Lawyer features many topics relevant to law students and young lawyers. Preston Parsons and I were interviewed for the most recent episode, Let’s Talk Articling.

Member Articles

Have a knack for writing? Have something to say? We are looking for member articles from all Section members (if you’re receiving this e-mail, that’s you!). These articles are open to the public (build your digital profile!) and featured in the quarterly Section Article Roundup, which goes to all CBA members, and on our Section’s webpage.

Section Committees

Our Section Executive had its in-person meeting September 13, 2019 in Ottawa, where representatives from across Canada came together to brainstorm, network and decide on a strategic direction for the 2019–2020 year.

Committees were struck to work on areas such as outreach, communications and engagement with representatives at law schools.

We also have three joint committees with the Young Lawyers Section:

Our Most Recent Updates

#LawNeedsWellnessBecause

Most recently, the Mental Health and Awareness Committee championed the #LawNeedsWellnessBecause campaign over the week of October 6-12, 2019. Our Section is excited to continue to build momentum on the work started by this committee.

Articling Survey Results

The Articling Committee recently made progress on the articling conditions front. In February 2019, in response to the survey results released on articling conditions in Ontario, we sent a letter to the Federation of Law Societies asking that this data be collected on a larger scale across Canada. The Law Society of Alberta just released the results of its survey. We were saddened to see that the trend was the same as in Ontario, but we are thankful that the data are being collected and that a Task Force is being formed to address the results.

Stay tuned for more news and events in the months to come, and please don’t hesitate to reach out to us with any questions, comments or feedback.

I hope that exam season goes smoothly...whether it is your first or nearing your last.

Best wishes,
Charlene Scheffelmair, Chair
