What will 2021 look like for the CBA Business Law Section? It’s up to you!

2020 will be a year we will never forget, but we look forward to what 2021 has to offer! The Section is what you, as members, make of it, so we encourage you to get involved with our activities. Please find below an update on where we have been and where we intend to go in 2021.

Advocacy Highlights

Our Section continues to participate in meetings and constructive dialogue with respect to advocacy initiatives that may impact your corporate/commercial clients.

In 2021, members of the Executive will volunteer and represent our Section on the following ongoing projects:

  • Consultation for the creation of a guidance document on business and human rights; and
  • Consultation on anti-corruption measures.

The Langlois Prize – Law Student Essay Contest

Calling all students: submit your essays by April 30! 2021 marks the third year of the law student essay contest, the Langlois Prize. Langlois Lawyers sponsors both the English and French contests related to general topics in Canadian business law.

I am pleased to announce our 2020 winners, Isabella Tamilia for her essay, “La règle selon laquelle un actionnaire d’une SPA ne dispose pas d’un recours direct contre le tiers qui cause un dommage à l’entreprise est-elle compatible avec les principes de base du C.c.Q.?” (only available in French), and Robert Nanni for his essay, “What’s in a name? Understanding ‘piercing the corporate veil’ in Canada after Yaiguaje v. Chevron Corp”.
