Extending Work Permits

CETA provides guidelines for extending work permits issued under the agreement. With the exception of ICTs, CETA work permits may be extended at the discretion of the officer adjudicating the application.

To extend a CETA work permit, applicants must:

  • submit an application before their initial work permit expires;
  • comply with the terms and conditions imposed on their initial entry;
  • hold a passport or travel document that is valid for the entire period of the proposed extension; and
  • demonstrate a new “offer of employment” has been submitted to IRCC through the Employer Portal in respect of their ongoing work in Canada.

Documentation Required for an Extension Application

To properly justify a CETA work permit extension, at least some of the following should be included with the application:

  • a service contract extension justification from the offering enterprise;
  • updated business plans;
  • an offer for a new contract; and/or
  • feasibility studies and marketing plans.
