Description

The Schulich School of Law, Dalhousie University, invites applications for a Staff Lawyer, initio Technology and Innovation Law Clinic, to commence as soon as possible.  This is a term position for 12 months (negotiable), with the possibility of extension.

Dalhousie University commits to achieving inclusive excellence through continually championing equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility.  The University encourages applications from Indigenous persons (especially Mi’kmaq), persons with a disability, racialized persons, including persons of Black/African descent (especially African Nova Scotians), women, persons of a minority sexual orientation and/or gender identity, and all candidates who would contribute to the diversity of our community.  For more information, please visit our website.

Dalhousie’s initio Technology and Innovation Law Clinic opened in March 2020. The Clinic is operated by the Schulich School of Law and provides early-stage start-ups with access to legal advice, information, and services. The Clinic’s staff and students collaborate with other support services in the innovation ecosystem in Nova Scotia to provide much needed assistance to entrepreneurs starting high-growth companies.

Reporting to the Director of the Law and Technology Institute at the Schulich School of Law, the Staff Lawyer will provide legal advice and services to early-stage companies in the areas of corporate law, intellectual property law, and technology law.  The Staff Lawyer will work directly with other entities in the innovation ecosystem in Nova Scotia.  Working closely with the Instructor of Record for the clinical advocacy law course, the Staff Lawyer will mentor and supervise an articled clerk and senior law students, and participate in the evaluation of student performance.  This position requires some business development activities, including presentations to early-stage start-up groups in the community.

Applicants should be a practicing member of the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society, or eligible for admission in a short time frame, with at least five year’s experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience) is required.  Corporate law experience is essential.  Experience in intellectual property and/or technology law would be a definite asset.  Experience in start-up law would be an asset.

The deadline for applications is August 23, 2022.
