Reporting to the Legal Supervisor, Land Practice Group, here’s how you’ll make a difference to the City of Edmonton as a Solicitor with primary duties involving general legal advice, land acquisition, legal drafting and contracts: 

  • Appear before Council or Council Committee 
  • Provide sound legal advice and recommendations regarding various issues primarily including expropriation, real estate acquisitions, and environmental issues impacting the acquisition of real property
  • Research and apply the law in divergent factual situations 
  • Gather facts through discussions with clients and through documents 
  • Draft legal agreements, documents and opinions 
  • Draft reports to Council Committee and City Council
  • Take a proactive role in providing recommendations to avoid risk/liability
  • Additional duties as required

Qualifications:

  • Membership with the Law Society of Alberta or the ability to attain membership with the Law Society of Alberta upon appointment 
  • 2 years practicing law post articles is preferred 
  • Experience in real estate law is an asset 
  • Experience in expropriation law is an asset 
  • Experience in environmental law is an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with confidence under time constraints 
  • Good verbal, negotiating and written communication skills 
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and decision making skills 
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well in a team environment 
  • Strong legal research skills and computer literacy 
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve results in the context of a respectful, inclusive and service-minded style

Salary: $85,123 - $168,018 (Annually)
