The Investment Funds Institute of Canada (IFIC) is recruiting a Senior Policy Advisor, Taxation (SPA). IFIC is the voice of Canada’s investment funds industry with approximately 150 member organizations, including fund managers, distributors and industry service organizations. IFIC’s members have approximately $2 trillion in assets under management and provide leading retail investment opportunities for Canadians. More information can be found at

While experience in the financial services sector is an asset, it is not an absolute requirement, and we welcome interest by tax lawyers with experience in any sector.

Reporting to the Vice-President, Policy & General Counsel, the SPA’s responsibilities include tax issue management, committee support, and external relationship development and maintenance.  The position requires an individual who can proactively advance fund-industry and investor-positive federal, provincial and occasionally international tax changes, and can help avoid or mitigate negative impacts of tax legislation on the fund industry and its investors.

The SPA reports to the Vice President, Policy and General Counsel and, as a subject matter expert, does not have staff reporting to them.  IFIC expects candidates from the Greater Toronto Area, but will consider strong candidates from Quebec, the Ottawa-area, or elsewhere, particularly if they are bilingual.

There are four facets to the role:

  • TAXATION WORKING GROUP:  Manage, facilitate, and support IFIC’s Taxation Working Group – a monthly committee where up to 90 industry experts and executives meet on tax policy, operations, and reporting issues.
  • GOVERNMENT RELATIONS:  Engage with federal and provincial government tax officials through written and person-to-person communication in support of the industry and its senior executives.
  • EDUCATION / INFORMATION:  Research, prepare, collect, organize, and present taxation information to IFIC members on an ongoing basis and through IFIC’s conferences, seminars, and workshops.
  • IFIC POLICY TEAM MEMBER:  Participate as a tax resource in Policy Team meetings and more broadly across IFIC.

Whether dealing with IFIC colleagues, industry professionals/executives, or government representatives, the SPA will have strong skills in research, writing, verbal communication, presentation, relationship building/maintenance, consensus building, and facilitation.  We require someone with at least 7 years’ experience in taxation.

  • Reviewing, analyzing and summarizing proposed or current legislation, policies, economic statements, and budgets
  • Monitoring relevant tax developments in Canada and abroad to assess their significance for the fund industry and its investors and their potential use as precedents for favorable change
  • Conducting or facilitating research to advance positions
  • Developing policy positions, technical submissions, proposals and strategies to support achieving objectives in conjunction with IFIC committees
  • Making recommendations to IFIC and The International Investment Funds Association (IIFA) committees and providing advice and assistance to IFIC staff, including on IFIC conferences, workshops and seminars
  • Engaging in ongoing discussion with regulators, IFIC members, other associations, and stakeholders to achieve objectives – including the CRA/Financial Services Liaison Committee and the Revenu QuĂ©bec Financial Markets Advisory Committee
  • Supporting IFIC’s Taxation Working Group and related sub-groups, IIFA Taxation Committee, IIFA Pension Committee, as well as other committees as required
  • The SPA will also perform other tasks supporting IFIC as identified from time to time

  • University degree in law, business, public policy, or other related discipline
  • 7-10 years of progressive experience in taxation, in the financial sector if possible
  • Ability to communicate highly effectively, both in writing and orally
  • Understanding of public policy development process
  • Excellent planning, organizational and execution abilities
  • Personable with strong relationship-building capabilities
  • Experience leading cross-functional initiatives and collaborating with multiple levels within organizations
  • Ability to build consensus
  • Ability to see the big picture, while managing details
  • Excellent team player
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Sound judgment and strong decision-making skills
  • Knowledge of French is an asset
