DESCRIPTION:

The Senior Legal Counsel provides advice on legal matters as they relate to real estate transactions. The incumbent advises the shareholders and senior management of legal requirements related to the company's day-to-day business activities.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Draft and review legal documents including offers to purchase, agreements of purchase and sale, financing contracts and other contracts
  • Provide legal counsel to various stakeholders in the real estate department with respect to issues related to real estate files.
  • Provide legal counsel and support in the pre-development process
  • Provide legal advice for all real estate and commercial transactions, contracts and on other matters
  • Negotiate offers to purchase and other contracts
  • Manage settlements of litigious files and ensure the effective use of the services of external counsel as it relates to real estate transactions
  • Document files and gather relevant facts to facilitate the work of external counsel on due diligence processes
  • Collaborate with the head of the legal department on real estate issues
  • Collaborate and participate in the development, implementation and enforcement of cohesive internal procedures.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • A minimum of 8 years of experience in real-estate law, including real-estate acquisitions and financing
  • L.B (Bachelors of Law) and Member of the Law Society of Ontario
  • Possess a sound legal knowledge and the ability to complete negotiations in an effective and timely fashion
  • Experience with financing and partnership agreements, an asset
  • Strong negotiation skills
  • Strong sense of priorities
  • Displays rigor
