The British Columbia Public Interest Advocacy Centre (BCPIAC) is a not-for-profit, regulatory and social justice-oriented law firm in Vancouver.  BCPIAC’s core mission is to advance the interests of generally unrepresented or underrepresented individuals and groups in areas of major public concern with a focus on the growing issue of energy poverty and how that intersects with climate change and reconciliation with our Province’s Indigenous peoples.

BCPIAC’s work currently focuses on energy regulation. This regulatory work includes regular interventions before the BC Utilities Commission on electricity, natural gas and ICBC matters on behalf of residential ratepayers with a view to addressing energy poverty and injustice. This involves working with client groups, experts, other intervenors and intervenor groups, stakeholders, community groups, and government representatives to advocate for better utility rates and services and meaningful changes that impact residential ratepayers throughout the province.

Membership in or eligibility for membership in the Law Society of British Columbia.

Knowledge of administrative law and governance, both substantive and procedural, is required and knowledge of or experience in utility regulation is an asset. Our work requires strong analytical skills, a desire to learn about a variety of subjects, the ability to conduct comprehensive research on a range of issues, including those of a unique and/or complex nature; proficiency in legal writing and oral advocacy is also required.

The successful candidate will be a strategic thinker, a team player with strong communication skills, an adept negotiator with the ability to influence others to reach consensus, and able to work within tight deadlines and handle multiple concurrent projects.

Ideally, the person joining us for this position will have utility regulatory experience or experience working with community organizations on behalf of, or working with, individuals who experience poverty or other forms of marginalization. Regardless, all BCPIAC staff must have a strong knowledge of and commitment to principles of anti-oppression as well as the willingness to constantly learn and adapt their analyses and lenses to become better allies and advocates.

Applications should include a resume as well as a cover letter outlining any relevant work or life experience that relate to BCPIAC’s work.

Please ensure that upon application you are ready to provide a writing sample, litigation resume, and references as these are required when interviews are scheduled.

BCPIAC is an equal opportunity employer and encourages applications from all qualified applicants.

Salary range for this position is $66,110.32 to $115,191.41 annually, set according to years of experience.  BCPIAC provides a full benefits package as well.
