The Justice Education Society of British Columbia (JES) is a non-profit organization with over 30 years of experience providing public legal education and justice system capacity building in Canada and overseas. In Canada, JES helps more than 700,000 British Columbians learn about our justice system and address their legal issues.

THE ROLE

Under the supervision of the BC & Digital Programs Director, the Legal Education and Information Manager will be responsible for leadership and oversight across JES BC Programs.  This person manages operations aspects of projects supporting JES in the delivery of quality products that meet funding requirements, ensuring delivery in a timely manner and within the budget.

Key Areas of Responsibility

Management

  • Help promote, grow and manage JES BC legal education and information projects
  • Ensure projects are meeting deliverables, on time and on budget
  • Monitor service delivery and ensure positive systems and practices are maintained
  • Provide guidance and support to encourage positive employee contributions
  • Draft periodic reports for executives and funders, as well as oversee evaluation of projects

Service Delivery

  • Provide ongoing support and training to first responders of Ask JES legal help services
  • Provide professional, direct service to family law LawCoachBC clients, providing legal information and referrals, not legal advice

Legal Writing and Editing

  • Review, edit and author as needed public legal education and information resources and supporting materials for legal education of youth and the public
  • Foster relationships in the legal community, recruiting volunteer lawyers to provide legal content review and coordinating projects with volunteer contributors
  • Ensure legal content is plain language and aligned with BC PLEI best practices

THE PERSON

Education

  • Law degree and a minimum of one year practicing law in Canada

Knowledge, skills and experience

  • Minimum 3 years’ work experience in the justice sector
  • Demonstrated experience managing people and projects (timelines, budgets and deliverables)
  • Proven experience authoring or providing public legal education and information – plain language experience preferred
  • Experience working with and providing positive assistance to family law clients
  • Experience working with Indigenous Peoples – preferred
  • Strong connections to BC’s legal community and familiarity with court processes
  • Self-motivated with analytical skills and ability to solve problems and propose solutions
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office/365 and Google Workspace applications
