SOGIC calls for Canada to take leadership role on LGBTI2S issues

  • August 20, 2018

Ahead of the August Equal Rights Coalition Global Conference on LGBTI Human Rights and Inclusive Development, the CBA’s Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Community wrote to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to urge his government to demonstrate Canada’s leadership in this field.

The conference, titled Leaving No One Behind, co-hosted by Canada and Chile, was held August 5-7 in Vancouver.

The SOGIC letter followed on a resolution passed earlier this year urging the government to “strengthen dialogue to obtain timely information and advice on the protection of LGBTI2S people” and to denounce human rights violations against this group wherever they occur.

“The ERC Global Conference presents a unique opportunity for Canada to demonstrate strong leadership among a global network of stakeholders and to articulate its commitment to advancing LGBTI2S rights domestically and internationally. We encourage you and your colleagues to take full advantage of this opportunity and look forward to seeing the positive outcomes of the conference.”
