Law School Student Membership Fee

WHEREAS a goal of the Canadian Bar Association and its branches is to increase membership, especially among the newer members of the profession and law school students;

WHEREAS the Canadian Bar Association recognizes the financial constraints of law school students and that many school clubs and associations charge nominal membership fees;

WHEREAS the Law School Student Reduced Fee Pilot Project was adopted by Council at the 1996 Annual Meeting in Vancouver, renewed from time to time since, and expires this year;

WHEREAS there has been an overall increase in law school student members in the CBA since the initial implementation of the reduced fee in 1996;

WHEREAS the Membership Committee believes that maintaining the reduced fee is necessary to ensure student loyalty;

BE IT RESOLVED THAT

  • Article 1(1)(c) of the CBA Regulations be amended to set the membership fee at $20 (including GST) for those members in the student category who are law school students;
  • Article 1(1)(e) of the CBA Regulations be amended to exempt the membership fee for law school students from annual indexing;
  • law school student members not be charged additional levies for The National and the Canadian Bar Review.
