Ottawa — Josh Weinstein of Winnipeg is the winner of the Canadian Bar Association’s (CBA) 2014 Douglas Miller Award. The award was presented yesterday at the CBA Mid-Winter Meeting of Council at the Chateau Laurier in Ottawa.
“Josh Weinstein is an active CBA member who participates enthusiastically in Association activities and enjoys both the work and the people involved in equal measure. I am pleased to recognize him for his signature dedication and team spirit that are synonymous with his CBA involvement,” says CBA President Fred Headon, of Montreal.
A 20-year member of the CBA, Mr. Weinstein is active in the CBA both nationally and at home in the Manitoba Branch of the CBA. He served as Chair of the National Criminal Justice Section from 2009 to 2010 and was a member of the CBA’s National Board of Directors from 2012 to 2013.
He served as President of the Manitoba Bar Association (Manitoba Branch of the CBA) from 2011 to 2012, and earlier association Co-Chair of the 2004 and 2005 Organizing Committee for the Mid-Winter Meeting in Winnipeg. He was involved in the Manitoba Bar Association (MBA) Criminal Law Section for many years. He also led the Law Day flash mob in Winnipeg that celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms in 2012.
He has extensive experience as a criminal defence lawyer with Myers Weinberg LLP in Winnipeg. His dedication to advocacy and to the CBA is demonstrated by his appearances on behalf of the Association before various Parliamentary committees including most recently before the Standing Committee on Justice, Human Rights, Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness on Bill C-13 (amendments to DNA sampling provisions) and Bill C-10 (Criminal Code amendments calling for mandatory minimum sentences for offences involving guns).
The Douglas Miller Award recognizes a CBA member in good standing who demonstrates outstanding dedication and team spirit and who attends the Mid-Winter Meeting. The award consists of a framed photograph of the sculpture entitled "Crane," carved from musk ox horn by Northwest Territories artist Rex Goose.
The Canadian Bar Association is dedicated to support for the rule of law, and improvement in the law, and the administration of justice. Members include some 37,500 lawyers, law teachers, and law students from across Canada.
