Statement from CBA President Steeves Bujold following the IBA Council meeting in Helsinki

  • May 29, 2023

On May 27, the International Bar Association (IBA) Council unanimously adopted a resolution on the creation of a special international criminal tribunal for the crime of aggression against Ukraine.

The resolution states that “The IBA:

  1. Once again, condemns Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.
  2. Confirms its strong support for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders.
  3. Urges the governments of the UN member states to support and endorse the setting up of a special international criminal tribunal for the crime of aggression against Ukraine.”

The representatives of the Bar Associations and Law Societies in the G7 countries also adopted a statement on April 29 regarding Ukraine, recalling and reaffirming the statement on the war in Ukraine that was adopted last year.

I was pleased to support these statements on behalf of the CBA. Our Association will continue to stand in solidarity with its colleagues in the Ukrainian Bar Association, and with the entire Ukrainian-Canadian community across the country.
