CBA President René Basque on court delays and the effects of Jordan

Many factors have exacerbated the problems of judicial delays over the years. Let’s be perfectly clear: the Jordan decision is not the cause of this situation, but it has shone a light on a systemic issue. Today, with courts staying charges in very serious criminal matters, this crisis has taken a worrisome turn. We believe that it is important for an accused to be tried within a reasonable time frame, as guaranteed by our Constitution. The CBA is also concerned about the impact these delays have on victims and witnesses, as well as their potential to undermine confidence in our justice system. We also maintain that an important part of the solution to this unacceptable situation is the immediate filling of judicial vacancies where the need is most urgent.
