Chief Justice, Minister of Justice at 2016 CBA Legal Conference
Aug. 11-14 in Ottawa

  • July 20, 2016

Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin and federal Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould headline the Canadian Bar Association’s (CBA) 2016 legal conference, Aug. 11-14 in Ottawa.

  • The Chief Justice will address CBA Council, the Association’s governing body, on Thursday, Aug. 11 at 9:30 am. Immediately following her remarks, she will be available for a media Q & A.
  • Throughout the day on Aug. 11, CBA Council will debate policy resolutions on criminal justice, end-of-life issues, legal aid, and judicial appointments, among others.
  • On Friday, Aug. 12 at 8:15 am, federal Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould will deliver the keynote address at the conference’s opening plenary.
  • On Friday, Aug. 12 at 3:15 pm, the CBA is hosting an event called The Pitch: Where startups state their case. It’s the first-ever legal innovation startup competition hosted by the CBA and LegalX (at MaRS Discovery District in Toronto). Five finalists have been invited to give a short presentation and answer questions in front of a live audience from the legal and startup industries – as well as potential partners and investors.
  • On Saturday, Aug. 13 at noon, Harley Finkelstein and Joe Frasca of Shopify, one of Canada’s fastest growing, multi-billion dollar companies, will describe how Shopify maintains its legal integrity in its self-proclaimed “get sh*t done” environment.
  • Breakout sessions take place on Friday, Aug. 12 and Saturday, Aug. 13. The programs are clustered around the themes of building a better profession, building a better practice and building a better person.
  • On Sunday, Aug. 14, at 10:45 am, Dealing With Scandals features a conversation with crisis management expert Judy Smith, the lawyer who inspired the hit TV series Scandal, and knows, better than most, that public opinion can make or break a client’s reputation. (Attendance at the session to be confirmed in advance.)
  • The conference takes place at the Westin Ottawa. Most sessions are open to accredited media. For accreditation, please contact Hannah Bernstein.

The CBA is dedicated to support for the rule of law, and improvement in the law and the administration of justice. Some 36,000 lawyers, notaries in Quebec, law teachers, and law students from across Canada are members.
