Digital Literacy Series demystifies technology in the legal profession

  • June 10, 2020

If it wasn’t already evident before the events of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is now clear that technology is reshaping the legal profession in Canada. From innovative legal technologies to the increasing likelihood of virtual courtrooms and hearings, technology is becoming the lifeline of a functional legal system.

Staying on top of digital trends is a crucial way to connect with and serve your clients. The CBA Digital Literacy Series will help you know what you need to know. Dynamic, on-demand videos presented by a panel of knowledgeable speakers will take on existing perceptions of technology and confront emerging challenges.

Registration for the Digital Literacy Series is now open. Each program includes an online dashboard, speaker biographies, quizzes and more. Registrants can purchase each of the five accredited programs individually or as package (the same as one program free).

The series is part of the CBA Futures with a second series is planned for 2021.

Behind the Digital Curtain: What Lawyers Should Know and What Clients Expect

In this high-level overview of the current technology landscape, learn how to best navigate your practice within the new digital landscape and why it is so important.

Protect Your Tech 1: The Dangers of Downplaying Cybersecurity

This two-part program includes both the lawyer and industry perspectives on responding to and preventing cyber attacks. It will focus on the risk environment, the “must do’s” and best practices for protection, and incident response – how it works, and what you should and shouldn’t do.

Protect Your Tech 2: Cyber Resilience for Lawyers and Law Firms

Instances of fraud, identity theft, extortion and defamation are issues facing law firms and lawyers, but not all in the same way.  Many firms mistakenly believe they are already protected by existing insurance coverage. Beyond firewalls, are you currently doing anything to mitigate the risk?

This session can be taken as a stand-along program, or as a complement to Protect Your Tech 1.

Legal Service Delivery: Integrating Tech into Your Practice

Innovative legal technology is often touted to simplify the day-to-day practice of law but integrating new tech and new process can be labour intensive, expensive and sometimes…even unnecessary.  In this session, participants will learn the key considerations for selecting the right technology, choosing the right time to make the transition, and implementing best practices to make sure it sticks.

Authentication in Practice: Navigating the Digital Fake

The digital world is overrun with misleading information. This session will provide you with an overview of legal issues to be aware of in the age of digital fakery, the warning signs to watch for, and the tools overcome threats such as deep fakes, targeted spear-phishing and phishing campaigns and risks of evidence-tampering.
