The Path: Your Journey Through Indigenous Canada

  • April 16, 2020

‘When you know better, you can do better’ is the CBA’s philosophy in responding to the Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

The CBA’s newest initiative in meeting that commitment is The Path – Your Journey Through Indigenous Canada. Launching in April 2020, this educational program seeks to increase awareness of the legacy of the Indian Residential School System, support anti racism/bias training, and increase cultural competency as it relates to the Indigenous community.

The CBA is offering 500 free registrations to members that sign-up as part of our response to the Truth and Reconciliation’s Call to Action to offer cultural awareness training for lawyers.

The learnings in this program meets the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action for Canadians to receive training in “cultural awareness”.

The program was created by NVision Insight Group, an organization that was created and run by Indigenous peoples to support Indigenous communities and support positive change.

Online modules will introduce participants to First Nations, Inuit and Métis ─ the three Indigenous peoples recognized in the Canadian constitution – and discuss defining moments that shape the history of Indigenous peoples and their relationships with European settlers, the British Crown and the Dominion of Canada.

Subsequent sessions will demystify some of the legal issues regarding the Indian Act, historical and modern treaties, and recent rulings by the Supreme Court of Canada by putting them in practical terms. The concluding module will provide participants with context to help the legal profession better understand the importance of Indigenous cultural traditions and values, and offer ways to strengthen relationships with Indigenous peoples.

The on-demand series of videos are in the process of being accredited for 4 hours of professionalism/ ethics/diversity/inclusion credits.

Program registration will be done through the Truth & Reconciliation microsite. The program consists of five modules and features two videos per module. Each video is accompanied by a short quiz with 10 questions (a blend of True or False and Multiple-Choice questions). The CBA is thrilled to announce that this program is available in both French and English. Due to current circumstances, there will be a slight delay for the French version of The Path, which will be launched on April 24, 2020.
