Notice re: Law Reform: Yukon Human Rights Act

MEETING ANNOUNCEMENT:

Date: Thursday: October 9th, 2008 at noon to 1:00 PM

Location: Elijah Smith Building, 3B Manitoba meeting room. RSVP to cbayukon

The purpose of the meeting will be to determine if any members of the CBA would be interested in making a submission to the Select Committee regarding the any amendments to the Yukon Human Rights Act.

BACKGROUND

I note that one of the objective of the CBA Yukon Branch under " 2(c) to promote public discussion of issues pertaining to justice and law reform"  On that basis I would like to inform you that a Select Committee on Human Rights was established by Order of the Legislative Assembly on April 9, 2008 (Motion #374). The Committee is charged with reviewing and reporting to the Assembly its findings and recommendations regarding public opinion on legislative options for amending the Human Rights Act.  There will be a public consultation meeting here in Whitehorse on October 8 at the High Country Inn at

The Select Committee will be accepting written submissions until October 17, 2008.

There will be public hearings of the all-party Select Committee on Human Rights, which will be collecting views and opinions of Yukon citizens and groups on legislative changes for amending the Yukon Human Rights Act. Meetings will be held in all communities and will begin on September 22 to October 10.
