The Canadian Bar Association sponsored Canada's first Law Day on April 18, 1983 to mark the anniversary of the proclamation of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Subsequent Law Days have been celebrated in April to commemorate the anniversary of the Charter's proclamation.

The theme for Law Day is "Access to Justice." The purpose of Law Day is to promote amongst Canadians an increased awareness of their legal rights and obligations. It is a national event with legal oriented activities being held across the nation.

This year Law Day is celebrated April 15, 2010, and CBA Saskatchewan is focusing on four events as follows:

1.  The eleventh annual McKercher Cup Mock Trial Competition for high school students. The mock trial competition recreates the dramatic centre of the justice system by allowing participants to play roles in trial, including prosecutor, defence counsel and witness. Such a "hands-on" learning activity provides students with the opportunity to learn the basic facts about court room procedures, rules of evidence and various legal concepts inherent in a criminal trial including "innocent until proven guilty".  This year's McKercher Cup is scheduled for Saturday, March 27, 2010 at the Court of Queen's Bench Court House in Saskatoon.

The Case, Registration Form and Guides can be found at the following links.  For any further information, please call the CBA Saskatchewan Branch Office at 306-244-3898.

4.  The annual Law Day Luncheons in Regina and Saskatoon  -  This year we are honoured to present our keynote speaker Mr. Alan Borovoy.  Mr. Borovoy will be speaking in Regina on Thursday, April 22, 2010 at the Conexus Arts Centre.  His topic in Regina will be:  "Recurring Threats to Civil Liberties".  He will be in Saskatoon on Friday, April 23, 2010 at the Delta Bessborough Hotel.  His topic in Saskatoon will be:  "Some Flaws in Our Laws".

Mr. Borovoy served from 1968 to 2009 as the General Counsel of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association.  He is a prolific writer with many articles and four books including "When Freedoms Collide, Uncivil Obedience - The Tactics and Tales of a Democratic Agitator, The New Anti-Liberals and Categorically Incorrect - Ethical Fallacies in Canada's War on Terror."  He is an Officer of the Order of Canada and has received five honourary Doctorate of Law degrees.
