AWARDS

The Canadian Bar Association - Nova Scotia has four awards that are presented annually:  the Distinguished Service Award, the  Community Service Award,  the Zöe Odei Young Lawyers' Award and the Law Day Award.


DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

Established in 1996, the CBA-Nova Scotia Distinguished Service Award is to honour, recognize and celebrate distinguished or exceptional service a member has made to the goals of the Canadian Bar Association following a review of the individual's contribution to the Nova Scotia Branch.

Eligibility - The Award is open to any individual CBA member in good standing of the Nova Scotia Branch. Table Officers of the Nova Scotia Branch are not eligible for this Award. A deceased CBA member may be nominated for the Award in the year in which he or she dies, otherwise there shall be no posthumous Award.

Criteria - The Award recognizes an individual who has shown accomplishment in the work of the Nova Scotia Branch in one or all of the following areas:

  • improvement in the law;
  • improvement in the administration of justice;
  • individual lawyer training;
  • advocacy in the public interest.

    Presentation - The Award is presented annually at the CBA-Nova Scotia Annual Professional Development Conference or some other venue determined by the Executive Committee. Candidates are responsible for their travel expenses to the presentation.

    Nomination Procedure - A Formal Nomination Form must be completed and submitted by an individual. Nominations must be accompanied by a letter in support, stating the reasons for the candidate's nomination, and a concise Curriculum Vitae of the Nominee must be included, and the nominee or family where appropriate must be advised that his or her name has been put forward for this Award.     Deadline for Applications - Application and supporting documentation must be filed by December 2.

    Selection Process - The Award is administered by the Selection Committee of the Nova Scotia Branch, which is appointed annually.  The Selection Committee may determine that no Award shall be granted in any one year.

    COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD

    Established in 2001, the CBA-Nova Scotia Community Service Award is to honour, recognize and celebrate the valuable contribution a member has made to various community and/or charitable causes at the local, provincial or federal level. This is a community service award - service to the profession is not part of the criteria.

    Eligibility - The Award is open to any individual CBA member in good standing of the Nova Scotia Branch. Neither Table Officers of the Nova Scotia Branch nor sitting members of government are eligible for this Award. A deceased CBA member may be nominated for the Award in the year in which he or she dies, otherwise there shall be no posthumous Award.

    Criteria - The qualifications to receive the Community Service Award may include but are not restricted to:

  • active participation in a charitable or non-profit organization;
  • implementation of special events or programs including assisting such organizations through periods of difficulty, change or restructuring;
  • contributions as a volunteer through education or promotion of volunteerism by way of ideas, practices or publications;
  • continued performance and effort over a period of years in a variety of volunteer activities which has resulted in the enhancement and improvement of the organization, activity or community.

    Presentation - The Award is presented annually in April during "volunteer week" at a venue determined by the Executive Committee. Candidates are responsible for their travel expenses to the presentation.

    ZOE ODEI YOUNG LAWYERS' AWARD

    The Zöe Odei Young Lawyers Award was established by the CBA in 2003 in memory of the late Zöe Odei of Halifax, an active CBA member who exemplified the distinguished and exceptional service contemplated by this Award. This Award is to honour and recognize a young lawyer’s distinguished or exceptional service to the Canadian Bar Association and the community or charitable causes.

    Eligibility - The Award is open to any individual CBA member in good standing of the Nova Scotia Branch who is a young lawyer as defined by the By-Laws of the Association as being not more than 10 years at the Bar or not older than 40 years of age. Table Officers of the Nova Scotia Branch are not eligible for this Award. A deceased CBA member may be nominated for the Award in the year in which he or she dies, otherwise there shall be no posthumous Award.

    Criteria - The qualifications to receive the this Award may include but are not restricted to:

  • accomplishment in the work of CBA - Nova Scotia in one or all of the following areas: improvement in the law; improvement in the administration of justice; individual lawyer training; advocacy in the public interest.

  • active participation in a charitable or non-profit organization;

  • implementation of special events or programs including assisting community or charitable organizations through periods of difficulty, change or restructuring;

  • contributions as a volunteer through education or promotion of volunteerism by way of ideas, practices or publications;

    LAW DAY AWARD

    The CBA - Nova Scotia Law Day Award is to honour, recognize and celebrate the contribution of organizations who:

  • Foster greater public understanding of the Canadian justice system and the role of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms within that system;
  • Encourage and promote access to justice;
  • Inform and educate the public about the courts, law enforcement agencies, the justice system and the legal profession;
  • Act as advocates on behalf of citizens in the Canadian justice system.

    Eligibility - Any organization that meets any or all of the objectives set out above is eligible and may be nominated or may enter by submitting an official entry to the Law Day Committee. Organizations which may be eligible include:

  • County Bar Associations;

  • Other law related organizations, including para-legal and law enforcement organizations;

  • Non-legal organizations, including schools, libraries and churches;
  • Advocacy organizations and special interest groups active in the legal and justice system.

    Criteria - Judging wil be based on: public response to the program; overall effort; innovation; creativity; and, informational value/educational merit. To assist in the judging, applicants or nominators are asked to submit materials for judging which may include, but which are not limited to:

  • Publications and other materials produced for or distributed by the organization nominated;
  • News releases, feature stories and editorials written about the organization;
  • Written summaries of the organization's mandate, activities and target group.

    Presentation - The Award is presented annually during Law Day events held in April each year or some other venue determined by the Executive Committee in consultation with the Law Day Committee. Candidates are responsible for their travel expenses to attend the presentation.

    Selection Process - All entries must be received on or before the deadline set by the Law Day Committee each year. All entries will be reviewed by the Law Day Committee. The final decision as to the recipient of the Law Day Award will be made by the Executive Committee on the recommendation of the Law Day Committee.
