 ugh Campbell Stansfield was appointed Chief Judge of the Provincial Court of British Columbia on July 1, 2005 . He is a British Columbia native, born in 1952, and raised in Vancouver. He has been married since 1975, and has four adult sons.
Judge Stansfield graduated from the University of British Columbia law school in 1979, and was called to the bar in 1980 . Early in his career he worked as a criminal prosecutor, and then in private practice, primarily litigating in Provincial Court, representing juvenile and adult accused persons, and the Superintendent of Child Welfare in child protection cases. In 1984 Judge Stansfield moved to a major Vancouver law firm where he practiced in civil, family and criminal litigation until he was appointed to the Provincial Court in 1993.
Judge Stansfield began his service as a judge in Vancouver, then moved to the Okanagan District in 1994 . In 1996 he was appointed Administrative Judge for the Okanagan. In April 1998 he was appointed Associate Chief Judge, and served in that capacity until 2002 being responsible, among other things, for oversight of the Judicial Justices of the Peace and implementation of the Criminal Caseflow Management Rules.
Throughout his years as a judge, Judge Stansfield has presided in all three areas of Provincial Court jurisdiction, namely civil, family and criminal proceedings. Judge Stansfield has served as chair of the Judges' Education Committee, and frequently has been a presenter in judicial education both in B.C. and nationally through the National Judicial Institute. For many years he has offered leadership in teaching mediation skills to his colleagues. He has served as a memberof the judges' Compensation Committee, the Chief Judge's civil justice committee, and the Justice Review Task Force's Street Crime Working Group.
