he 2009 Victoria Law Day was held on Saturday, April 18, 2009 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Victoria Courthouse at 850 Burdett Avenue. In Victoria, Law Week is a collaborative project organized through the partnership of the Canadian Bar Association, British Columbia Branch and the Victoria Bar Association.
Seven hundred people participated in Victoria Law Day. Each year, attendance at Law Day has increased significantly and this year is no exception with approximately 200 more people participating. Families, boy scouts, seniors, civil servants, lawyers and students came to learn about the Canadian justice system. Approximately 30 community groups attended to provide the public with information about their law and advocacy services and numerous high school students attended to participate in the Fifth Annual Provincial High School Moot Trial Competition.
Highlights of the day included the Victoria Police Canine Unit demonstration, the Trial of Goldilocks, “Who Wants to be a Mediator” game show, court talks and tours where the Honourable Mr Justice Macaulay and the Honourable Judge Neal spoke with the public. Registry clerks and sheriffs explained their roles and offered tours of the holding cell and police vans. The Westshore RCMP provided the public with information about drugs and alcohol in an interactive forum.
The organizing committee thanks all of the people, organizations and businesses who volunteered their time and services to help make the justice system more accessible to members of the public through Law Day. The Victoria Bar Association and the Canadian Bar Association provided funding and support for the event, and the Law Courts Education Society, Court Services, Sheriff Services and Legal Services Society took the lead to make Law Day in Victoria happen.
