Port Coquitlam 2008

he 2008 Port Coquitlam Law Day was held on April 17, 2008 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Port Coquitlam Courthouse at 2620 Mary Hill Road. This year's events included a court orientation and tours along with Q&A sessions with a judge, crown counsel and a deputy sheriff. At 10:00 am a meet and greet took place outside the Law Courts at the steam clock.

Sgt Phil Reid of the Port Moody Police Department and a victim service worker spoke on a topic related to the Law Week theme "Access to Justice: Breaking Down Barriers." A sheriff vehicle display was held at the rear of the courthouse.

The mock trial of Regina v Peter Pan was held from 11:15 am to 12:00 pm at the Port Coquitlam Law Courts. The defendant, Peter Pan, was acquitted of all charges. The Honourable Judge de Couto of the Provincial Court of British Columbia presided over the trial. The roles of the witnesses and the defendant were performed by students from Maillard Middle School. The Honourable Judge de Couto, Marlene Mann, Rob Gunnell and Valerie Christopherson discussed their roles and answered questions from the public.

On Saturday, April 19, 2008, the BC Branch of the Canadian Bar Association held its province-wide “Dial-A-Lawyer” as part of Law Week. Port Coquitlam area residents were invited to call between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm to speak with a lawyer for up to 15 minutes at no cost.
