New Westminster 2008

he New Westminster open house was held on April 15, 2008 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at the New Westminster Law Courts at 651 Carnarvon Street. Law Day events in New Westminster offered a variety of activities for the public, including a court orientation and tour, Q&A sessions with a judge, crown counsel and a deputy sheriff, and a mock trial.

At 10:00 am a meet and greet took place outside the Law Courts at the Judge Begbie statue where a brief history of the New Westminster Law Courts was given. A victim service worker and a court clerk spoke about their roles and how they relate to the Law Week theme "Access to Justice: Breaking Down Barriers." The sheriffs provided an interesting sheriff vehicle display at the rear of the courthouse.

The mock trial of Regina v Peter Pan was held from 11:15 am to 12:00 pm at the New Westminster Law Courts in Heritage Courtroom 207. The Honourable Judge Thomas, retired, presided over the trial. Students from Lord Tweedsmuir Elementary School performed in the roles of the witnesses and the defendant. The defendant, Peter Pan, was acquitted of all charges. After the mock trial, court room personnel gave an interactive court orientation on their roles along with a Q&A session.

The Honourable Judge Steinberg of the Provincial Court of British Columbia, Jas Gahunia, David Hunter and Dave Emmerson discussed their roles and answered questions from the public.

On Saturday, April 19, 2008, the BC Branch of the Canadian Bar Association held its province-wide “Dial-A-Lawyer” as part of Law Week. New Westminster area residents were invited to call between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm to speak with a lawyer for up to 15 minutes at no cost.
