he Victoria open house was held on April 21, 2007 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Victoria courthouse. The 2007 Law Day events in Victoria were very successful, attracting a large crowd and offering a variety of activities for the public. The well-attended open house featured a mock trial competition, resource rooms on civil, family and criminal law, a Q&A session with members of the provincial and supreme court judiciary and a sheriff, and tours of courthouse in-custody facilities, a court and sheriff vehicles. Glenlyon Norfolk School hosted their third annual moot competition in the courthouse with members of the public in attendance as students made their arguments. Refreshments were served throughout the day to members of the public and school groups.
The fairy tale mock trial of Alice in Wonderland generated great public interest. Alice was judged by a jury of her peers and acquitted of theft under $1,000 for stealing currant cookies and disturbing the peace. The jury was selected from children in the audience.
Police seminars were held on crystal meth, dating violence, and impaired driving. Public education seminars were also held on wills and estates, child and spousal support, and how to prove your case in court. Resource rooms with information on family law, criminal law and civil law were available for members of the public as well as information on legal aid and pro bono services and basic principles of law, evidence and procedure for self-represented litigants.
Our thanks to Sarah Klinger, Forrest Nelson, Sylvia Sangha and Kerry Simmons for their work in the planning of Victoria Law Day events.
