 he open house was held on April 21, 2007 from 9:30 am to 3:20 pm at the Vancouver Public Library. It was a resounding success, as hundreds of people attended free events that included a public forum, a mock trial, displays and demonstrations from 32 organizations, and law classes that were hosted by the People’s Law School.
The highly anticipated public forum that was hosted by Ian Hanomansing of CBC received considerable media attention. The forum presented the public with an opportunity to ask questions of a panel of senior justice representatives. The panel consisted of:
A citizenship ceremony was held for 60 new Canadian citizens from 32 countries. The Honourable Wally Oppal, QC, Chief Justice Lance Finch, the Honourable Senator Mobina Jaffer, QC, and Kerry-Lynne Findlay, QC participated as keynote speakers at the ceremony. Our thanks to Sylvia Wong, Director John Kent and the staff at Citizenship and Immigration Canada for coordinating the citizenship ceremony.
The RCMP and Vancouver Police Department demonstrations were well received, as members of the public were able to see the real “CSI” in action. Police displays and demonstrations included a boat, police dogs and horses, vehicles and motorcycles.
The high profile mock trial of Carson Beancounter for the murder of Donald Deadduck generated immense public interest. The packed courtroom watched as grade 11 and 12 students performed the roles of crown counsel, defendant and defense counsel.
The People’s Law School hosted two free well-attended law classes for the public on Wills & Estates and Divorce: Custody & Division of Assests. Thanks to Andrew Nip of the People’s Law School for organizing these classes.
