Guidelines for Participation

he Student Mentorship Program will be held in April 2008. Lawyers may arrange another time if that is more convenient. The Program is open to any practising lawyer working in the Lower Mainland. Eligible students who are enrolled in Grades 11 or 12 at a high school in the Lower Mainland are encouraged to participate.

Lawyers wishing to be matched with a student will be advised by the Committee of the name, address and telephone number of the student. Similarly, students will be advised of the name and phone number of the lawyers with whom they are matched. In addition, the teachers will be advised of the matches.

Both lawyers and students are responsible for contacting each other to arrange a mutually agreeable morning or afternoon during April 2008, or if necessary, outside of April 2008.

Each lawyer will personally spend the agreed upon time with the assigned student. The lawyer is to involve the student in the lawyer’s regular work day as much as possible in order to give the student insight into the practice of law.

If, for any reason, the lawyer is unable to carry through with his or her commitment to the program then the lawyer is responsible to find a suitable substitute lawyer (but not an articling student) and notify the Committee of the change.

If the student, for any reason, is unable to carry through with his or her commitment to this program, the student is responsible for notifying the assigned lawyer and the student’s teacher.

If the lawyer has offered to participate with a class or group at a school, the lawyer will be advised of a contact person at that school and will contact the person to make the necessary arrangements.
