ach year during Law Week the BC Branch of the Canadian Bar Association sponsors mock trials for middle school and high school students throughout British Columbia. Here are the highlights for mock trials held in 2007.

Dawson Creek - April 19, 2007 Dawson Creek’s Law Day focused on a mock murder trial that was conducted by students from the South Peace Secondary School’s Law 12 class. Students portrayed the roles of crown counsel, defendant and defense counsel. The jury was selected from members of the public. Refreshments were served to members of the public and school groups.

Fort St John - April 18, 2007 The most popular event at the Fort St John open house was a mock robbery trial with a judge, local area lawyers in the roles of crown counsel, defendant and defense counsel, and a police officer whom presented forensic evidence. The jury was selected from members of the public. The trial was followed by a Q&A session with the judge where members of the public had an opportunity to ask questions about the justice system.

New Westminster - April 19, 2007 Law Day events in New Westminster were very successful, attracting a large crowd and offering a variety of activities for the public. The well-attended mock trial of Peter Pan who was charged with abducting the Darling children generated great interest. Mr Pan was acquited of all charges. Refreshments were served to members of the public and school groups.

Port Coquitlam - April 20, 2007 The mock trial received great interest, attracting more than 110 members of the public. Extra seating to accommodate the audience was necessary for this popular event despite it being held in the largest courtroom in the Port Coquitlam provincial courthouse. Refreshments were served to members of the public and school groups.

Prince George - March 23, 2007 The 2007 open house was the most successful to date, attracting more than 400 participants and members of the public. A packed courthouse watched the highly anticipated trials of the "Three Little Pigs" and "Peter Rabbit." Refreshments were served to members of the public and school groups.

Vancouver - April 21, 2007 The high profile mock trial of Carson Beancounter for the murder of Donald Deadduck generated immense public interest. A packed courtroom watched as grade 11 and 12 students in the roles of crown counsel, defendant and defense counsel. Carson Beancounter was acquitted of all charges.

Victoria - April 21, 2007 Glenlyon Norfolk School hosted their third annual moot competition in the courthouse with members of the public in attendance as students made their arguments. The fairy tale trial of Alice in Wonderland generated great public interest. Alice was judged by a jury of her peers and acquitted of theft under $1,000 for stealing currant cookies and disturbing the peace. The jury was selected from children in the audience.
