Courthouse Tours 2007

ach year during Law Week members of the public are invited to participate in a variety of fun and educational activities such as mock trials, free law classes, courthouse tours, displays and demonstrations from a variety of justice and social service providers, Q&A sessions with senior justice system representatives, and police seminars at events held across British Columbia.

The courthouse tours provide an excellent opportunity for the profession to educate the public about the vital role that lawyers and the judiciary serve in guaranteeing an open, independent and unbiased judicial system.

Dawson Creek - April 19, 2007
Dawson Creek’s Law Day events included a courthouse tour and information booths from a variety of justice organizations. The mock murder trial held at the courthouse was conducted by students from the South Peace Secondary School’s Law 12 class. Students portrayed the roles of crown counsel, defendant and defense counsel. The jury was selected from members of the public. Refreshments were served to members of the public and school groups.


Fort St John - April 18, 2007
The most popular event at the Fort St John open house was a mock robbery trial with a judge, local area lawyers in the roles of crown counsel, defendant and defense counsel, and a police officer whom presented forensic evidence. The jury was selected from members of the public. The trial was followed by a Q&A session with the judge where members of the public had an opportunity to ask questions about the justice system.


New Westminster - April 19, 2007
Law Day events in New Westminster were very successful, attracting a large crowd and offering a variety of activities for the public. The well-attended open house featured a court orientation and tour, Q&A sessions with a judge, crown counsel and a deputy sheriff, and a mock trial for Peter Pan whom was charged with abducting the Darling children. The exhibition area was busy with tours of transport vehicles, conducted by sheriffs.


Port Coquitlam - April 20, 2007
A court orientation and tours were conducted along with Q&A sessions with a judge, crown counsel and a deputy sheriff. The mock trial received great interest, attracting more than 110 members of the public. Extra seating to accommodate the audience was necessary for this popular event despite it being held in the largest courtroom in the Port Coquitlam provincial courthouse.


Prince George - March 23, 2007
The open house was held early to coincide with the tenth anniversary of the opening of the Prince George Law Courts. The well-attended open house attracted more than 400 members of the public. It featured two mock trials, 13 display tables from public service agencies, and presentations by legal system representatives and a RCMP dog handler.


Vancouver - April 21, 2007
The Vancouver open house was a resounding success, as hundreds of people attended free events that included a mock trial, displays, and demonstrations from 32 organizations. The high profile mock trial of Carson Beancounter for the murder of Donald Deadduck generated immense public interest. A packed courtroom watched as grade 11 and 12 students in the roles of crown counsel, defendant and defense counsel.


Victoria - April 21, 2007
The 2007 Law Day events in Victoria were very successful, attracting a large crowd and offering a variety of activities for the public. The well-attended open house featured a mock trial competition, resource rooms on civil, family and criminal law, a Q&A session with members of the provincial and supreme court judiciary and a sheriff, and tours of courthouse in-custody facilities, a court and sheriff vehicles.
