ne of the cornerstone events held in British Columbia during Law Week is the annual Barry Sullivan Law Cup Public Speaking Contest. This contest is open to students enrolled in Grades 11 and 12 in British Columbia. The Law Cup is named in memory of Barry Sullivan in recognition of his contributions to both the legal and educational professions. The Law Cup is presented to the provincial winner of the contest.
The 2007 Barry Sullivan Law Cup Public Speaking Contest was held on April 19th at the Vancouver Law Courts. Students presented five minute speeches on topics that pertained to this year's theme "Access to Justice" and to the 25th anniversary of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The semi-finals of the contest were judged by senior lawyers. The finalists were judged by a panel composed of The Honourable Lance S.G. Finch, Chief Justice of the British Columbia Court of Appeal, The Honourable Donald Brenner, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of British Columbia and senior members of the judiciary.
We would like to thank all of the semi-finalists, judges, and students for their participation in this event and Mr. Sullivan’s widow Ms. Dawn Waddell and her family for their support of the Barry Sullivan Law Cup Public Speaking Contest.
