Professional Development2.4 Speaking Truth to PowerMonday, August 18, 2:00 – 4:00 Lawyers who advise the different levels of government share a challenge with in-house corporate counsel—speaking truth to power. Both types of lawyers find themselves in a similar position—their jobs can depend on the favour of the bureaucrats, politicians, CEOs and directors that they report to, yet they often have to report on the shortcomings or failings of these same individuals. This program will examine specific case studies where these challenges have been experienced and in some cases overcome, namely advising governments on the illegality of legislative proposals and the role of corporate counsel in ensuring adherence to securities reporting requirements. Last year’s firing of federal prosecutors south of the border, allegedly for political reasons, will also be open for discussion. Speakers: |
