The Canadian Bar Association is taking action to reverse the federal government’s recent decision to eliminate funding to the Court Challenges Program, which is a cornerstone of Canadian democracy.
A longtime supporter of the Court Challenges Program, the CBA reacted immediately, decrying the cuts and reaffirming its support for the program. Most recently, the CBA reaffirmed its support for the program at its 2006 Canadian Legal Conference in St. John’s. It called on the federal government to not only increase funding, but also to ensure the program’s long-term financial stability.
The CBA has undertaken a multi-faceted initiative to urge the government to reinstate the program immediately. This site offers the current CBA position and background materials, and offers ways in which you can get involved in speaking out on this issue that is vitally important for all Canadians.
What we’ve done:
“The CCP gives Canadians a doorway into the legal system. For those who are too vulnerable and disenfranchised to obtain fair treatment from the system on their own, it’s often the only access they have.”
—CBA President J. Parker MacCarthy, Q.C.
