FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 1, 2001
OTTAWA - Pierre-C. Gagnon, of Lavery, de Billy in Quebec City is the winner of the Canadian Bar Association's 2001 Douglas Miller Award. He received the award at the CBA Mid-Winter Meeting of Council on Feb. 17 at Mont Ste-Anne, Quebec.
"Pierre's contribution to the Association can best be described in terms of his leadership, dedication and enthusiasm. His guidance and involvement in both Branch and National activities is inspiring and invaluable," says CBA President Daphne Dumont, Q.C., of Charlottetown.
Pierre Gagnon's involvement in the CBA dates back to the 1980s. He organized the Law and the Media program in Quebec City from 1984-1986 and chaired the Branch's Law Day Committee in 1987. He served as co-chair of the 1993 Quebec City Annual Conference and has been a member of the CBA's National Executive. He was President of the Quebec Branch in 1998-1999. His interests include improving the civil justice system, bolstering international relations and promoting public legal education. He is currently an active member of the CBA's International Development Committee.
The Douglas Miller Award was established by the CBA in memory of the late Douglas Miller of Yellowknife, an active CBA member who participated enthusiastically in Association activities, enjoying both the work and the people involved. The Award recognizes a CBA member who demonstrates outstanding dedication and team spirit in his or her ongoing involvement with the Association.
"The Doug Miller Award illustrates that our Association is more than an intricate structure of hard- working people, and more than a network of great legal minds," said Pierre Gagnon on receiving the award. "We are a family of individuals whose busy lives interconnect."
The Canadian Bar Association is dedicated to improvement in the law and the administration of justice. Some 37,000 lawyers, notaries, law teachers, and law students from across Canada are members.
