Search Tips

The Bar Review search engine makes it easy to find the results you’re looking for, fast. These advanced search tips can help you refine your search even further. Tips are arranged by search criteria:

Keyword

Place multiple words in quotation marks to search for exact phrases. Enter two or more words outside quotation marks to search for articles containing all of those words. For example:

  • enter “privacy legislation” (in quotation marks) to find all articles with the exact phrase privacy legislation
  • enter privacy legislation (not in quotation marks) to find all articles containing the words privacy and legislation
  • enter “privacy legislation” decision to find all articles with both the exact phrase privacy legislation and the word decision

Author

The Author field narrows your search to the author’s last name, first name or both. When entering a full name, enter the first name followed by the last name (i.e. John Smith).

Enter only one author name at a time. Do not use quotes around names or use any other advanced search functions in this field. Do not use french accents when searching by author name.

Title

The Title field narrows your search by article titles as they appear in the Bar Review. Enter a complete article title if you know it exactly. For more general searches, try using single words or common phrases. For example:

  • enter administrative law to find all articles with the exact phrase administrative law in the title
  • enter administrative to find all articles with the word administrative in the title

Enter only one title at a time. Do not use quotes around titles or use any other advanced search functions in this field. Do not use french accents when searching by title.

A note on French accents when searching by Author and Title:

Article titles and author names in the Bar Review do not include french accents (i.e. LE CONTROLE JUDICIAIRE EN DROIT PENAL CANADIEN or ANDRE SAUVE). As a result, you must omit french accents when searching by title and/or author (i.e. enter "penal", not "pénal", and enter "Andre", not "André").

Date

The default date range will search all previous volumes of the Bar Review. Change the Start Year, End Year or both to narrow your search to a specific year or range of years.
