With the arrival of compulsory professional development in many Canadian jurisdictions, it is more important than ever to have easy access to convenient, cost-effective options which address topics relevant to your areas of practice and interest.
At the provincial, territorial and national levels, the CBA welcomes your involvement. The BC Branch offers a full range of sections, committees, and special interest groups as an entry point for members to become active in the CBA. Through the work of its sections, committees and task forces, the CBA is seen as an important and objective voice on issues of significance to both the legal profession and the public.
How to Report Your Professional Development Hours
All Law Society members are required to report their Professional Development (PD) hours every year. As a service to CBABC members, attendance at Section meetings and other CBA PD events are recorded to the CBA PD Resource Site. This tool helps members track progress towards their personal goals and mandatory continuing professional development.
CBABC Forums and Sections
Sections/Fora are groups that meet to share knowledge and networking opportunities, and provide resources to meet the educational, advocacy and professional needs of lawyers. Sections are consistently rated the single most valuable resource the CBA offers to members.

Annual Mandatory Reporting to the Law Society on Professional Development Hours
The Law Society of British Columbia instituted mandatory reporting of professional development effective January 1, 2009. All practising lawyers -- full time and part time -- must complete a minimum of 12 hours of approved educational activities annually. At least two hours must pertain to any combination of professional responsibility and ethics, client relations, and practice management. For more information, visit the Law Society of British Columbia website.
The Canadian Bar Association is pleased to report that the Law Society of British Columbia has confirmed that professional development activities include attendance at CBABC Section presentations. As well, a personal tally of your CBABC professional development hours will be available online to members to view and print at will. CBA membership and Section participation is a very cost-effective means of achieving the professional development expectations of the Law Society.
