Your insight is needed

  • November 08, 2021

The recovery from the pandemic provides a unique opportunity to do things better. Now, more then ever, our section needs forward thinkers and leaders. We are looking for lawyers who can help our country and provinces move forward when it comes to employee benefits and pensions.

This year’s Executive Committee has an ambitious mission of increasing Section membership by providing value to members in terms of advocacy, professional development and the opportunity to interact with regulators and other practitioners. We are aiming to engage new lawyers throughout the CBA. Pension and employee benefits issues come up in many different practice areas. We want to hear from you!

We are actively engaged in advocating for pension standards reform, organizing activities and professional development programs for the benefit of our members. Check out our webpage to find out more about the resources available, our submissions on pension standards reform, and Section member articles. Our recent submissions include:

Volunteer

Accomplishing these goals requires your energy and expertise so we are counting on you to volunteer on the various committees doing work in advocacy & government relations, outreach & communications, and professional development. We value diversity and keep it in mind for the composition of our committees. Join a Committee!

Advocacy Work

If you cannot volunteer, we would like your input on our advocacy work. Each year, representatives of the Section are invited to attend meetings with the Canadian Association of Pension Supervisory Authorities (CAPSA), Finance Canada, the Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA) and the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI).

During these meetings, the Executive members share ideas and discuss emerging trends and challenges in pensions & benefits and provide input on current issues. We are seeking suggestions from Section members on questions and topics of general relevance and application (as opposed to advocacy for a specific client or matter). Some past issues have included:

  • Health and Welfare Trusts
  • Correcting Administrative Errors
  • Discrimination in Pensions and Benefits Plans

Send us your ideas by November 15, 2021 to be considered for our next set of meetings but your input is welcome anytime. We look forward to hearing from you.
