Message from the Chair

  • December 25, 2014

It is with great pleasure that we share the latest achievements of the International Initiatives Program and our partners with you in this newsletter.

It has been a busy year with some major projects coming to a close in China and Vietnam, while other projects are starting to demonstrate important results. You will find highlights of our recently completed project supporting the development of the Vietnam Bar Federation (VBF) and the latest developments under our project aiding the Government of Vietnam's efforts to bring clarity to the “jungle of laws” that make up the country's legal framework. We also have a feature on our November Regional Conference in Tanzania on enhancing access to justice for children and youth in East Africa.

We have also taken on some other important initiatives this year to leverage and build on our experience working on international justice reform issues. I am most pleased to announce that a resolution supporting inclusion of the rule of law as a specific goal for the Post-2015 Development agenda (which will replace the Millennium Development Goals) was unanimously passed by Council in in August. We also co-hosted a very successful workshop with the Department of Justice called The Twitter Effect: Can Technology Advance Democratic Development and the Rule of Law? at the annual CBA Legal Conference in St. John's. More information on both of these initiatives can be found below.

Finally, I am extremely pleased to note that Jennifer Khor, who served as the CBA’s Long Term Advisor to the VBF in Hanoi, along with Robin Sully, the CBA's former Director of International Development, have been awarded a medal from the VBF for their contribution to development of the legal profession in Vietnam. Robin's outstanding contributions to advancing international human rights were also recognized last month when she was awarded the prestigious Walter S. Tarnopolsky Award. Please join me in congratulating both Jennifer and Robin on these wonderful achievements.
