As chair of the Section, I would like to take this opportunity to reach out to you and share the plans and activities of the CBA National Constitutional and Human Rights Law Section for the upcoming year. The 2016/17 year will be a busy and exciting time for the Section.

SAVE THE DATES

  • November 8, 2016 – We have an upcoming professional development webinar titled “Access to Information at a Crossroads: Implications of the Long-gun Registry Case”. Learn more and register now!
  • November 24, 2016 – We are offering a second webinar titled “Overturning Precedent: The Implications of Carter and Bedford on future Constitutional Cases”. This session features one of our own, Cheryl Milne, as one of the guest speakers and will review the strategies and issues faced by constitutional litigants when they must appeal to the courts to overturn previous constitutional precedents.   • Spring 2017 – We are also planning a 2017 Constitutional and Human Rights Law conference which will celebrate 150 years with Canada’s constitution. Check the Section webpage regularly for updates!

WAYS TO GET INVOLVED AND HELPFUL RESOURCES

  • We encourage those who would like to become involved in Section activities to email our staff liaison Nathalie Gravelle-Ray.
  • We have created a subcommittee within our National Executive to reach out to young lawyers and to law students. This subcommittee will be meeting over the course of this year and developing an action plan with concrete objectives for involving these cohort groups in our Section’s activities. If you have ideas or would like to become more involved, please contact our young lawyers’ representative Amélie Lavigne or our law students’ representative Etienne Gabrysz-Forget at cbaconstitutional@cba.org
